LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Gwinnett County firefighters responded to a house fire in Lawrenceville in the 100-block of Paris Drive early Wednesday morning.  They believed lightning struck the attic, causing the fire.

It happened around midnight.

"When I stepped off my front porch and came around, the entire roof was ablaze," said Carl Jones, who lives next door.

When firefighters arrived, they were forced to back-out and fight the fire from the outside due to a partially-collapsed roof and intense conditions.

The fire heavily damaged the home.

A man was home at the time and smelled smoke. He escaped uninjured.

"It's just tragic for that to happen. He lost everything," said Jones.
