CHEROKEE COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Cherokee County Fire and Emergency Services said a lightning strike may have caused a house fire Tuesday night.
The fire happened at a home on Jefferson Township Lane around 7 p.m.
Firefighters said a 69-year-old woman, who was inside the house, said a major thunderstorm came through and a lightning bolt struck the house. She and a neighbor checked for damage, but couldn't find any signs of smoke or fire.
The woman told firefighters that almost 10 minutes later, the smoke detector went off and smoke quickly filled the kitchen. She was able to get herself and her 75-year-old husband out of the house safely.
The fire caused severe damage to the home. No one was injured.
