SAVANNAH, GA (AP) -
Officials are anticipating a huge turnout for Fourth of July fireworks in Savannah, where the colony of Georgia was founded 43 years before America declared its independence.
The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/MU9kP5) police are predicting 60,000 spectators will crowd the downtown riverfront Wednesday to watch the annual fireworks display. That's equal to 44 percent of the city's population. Of course, Savannah will also be full of holiday tourists.
Police say they'll have extra officers working to deal with the anticipated traffic jams and to keep an eye out for drunken drivers.
Savannah is where the British established Georgia as their 13th American colony in 1733. After America declared independence on July 4, 1776, battles were fought here in the resulting Revolutionary War.
