ATHENS, GA (AP) -
University of Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell faces felony weapons charges after police found a gun in his vehicle early Friday morning.
Athens-Clarke Police Department spokeswoman Hilda Sorrow says Crowell was arrested at a vehicle checkpoint on the UGA campus at around 2:20 a.m. Among the charges he faces are carrying a concealed weapon and possession of a weapon on school property.
Crowell consented to a search after officers smelled marijuana in the vehicle. Police found a 9-millimeter Luger pistol under the driver's seat with an altered serial number.
Crowell, 19, came to UGA in 2011 as the top-rated running back prospect in the country and was slated to start for the Bulldogs this fall.
Crowell remains in custody at the Athens-Clarke County jail and is not eligible for bond.
According to Bulldog head coach Mark Richt, University of Georgia sophomore tailback Crowell has been dismissed from the team as of Friday.
"We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season," said Richt. "Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort."
