FAYETTEVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Shocking surveillance video shows a man reaching under dressing room doors and snapping photographs of women while they're undressing. Police charged Maurice Smith with felony Peeping Tom and felony illegal surveillance.
But what's worse, Smith is seen holding his 1-month-old daughter during the alleged crimes.
Police caught Smith in the Fayetteville Goodwill store parking lot as he was leaving. A customer called police and told them she saw Smith snapping photos on his cell phone while she was in the dressing room, and once they dug deeper investigators said they found photos of even more women.
"Very, very frightening," said Fayetteville Police Detective Mike Whitlow as he described Smith's alleged crimes.
Police said Smith calmly strolled near dressing room doors at the Fayetteville Goodwill store and then crouched low to snap photos of women undressing - but the victim noticed something wasn't right.
"She felt and heard a noise behind her, turned around and actually saw his hand with the cell phone," Whitlow said.
That's when police said Smith walked out of the store while his victim was calling police. Officers caught Smith in the parking lot and found even more photos on his phone.
"He also took pictures of another customer out on the sales floor as she was bending over looking at merchandise," Whitlow said. "All this while he's holding a 1-month-old baby girl in his arms."
The video shows a white bonnet which belongs to Smith's young daughter - even his wife was inside the store shopping.
Debra McDaniel also shops at the same Goodwill - she can't believe anybody would be so bold to snap photos of strangers while they undressed.
"And there's pictures out there on the internet somewhere, probably," McDaniel said.
That's what worries investigators – figuring out where those images end up.
"What he was doing with these photos," Whitlow said. "This is one of those things we learned today, there's a subculture of this fetish out there."
Cops said Smith denied posting any photos like that on the internet, but investigators worry there are probably more victims outstanding. Police urge people to call authorities if they fear they too have been victimized.
