Ga. to escort 314-ton machine trucked across state

SAVANNAH, GA (AP) -

Georgia officials are helping with plans to move a 314-ton machine across the state using its highways.

The massive machine press scheduled to arrive at Savannah's port Thursday night is headed for an auto parts supplier in LaGrange, roughly 280 miles away in west Georgia.

The state Department of Transportation says the move will require a transport truck that's 20-feet wide and 254-feet long, with 31 axles. The shipment will also need a law enforcement escort as it moves slowly along the interstates at no more than 45 mph.

The trek will take place overnight Thursday and Friday, pausing during the day in between, to minimize disruption to other motorists.

The machine is being trucked to Sewon America Inc., which supplies auto parts to the KIA plant in West Point.
