CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
It was around 2 p.m. that Clayton County police officers responded to a 911 call about a possible burglary on the 1600 block of Bonanza Church Road.
When officers arrived, Police Chief Gregory Porter said his officers made contact with a 13-year-old armed with a pistol.
"At the rear location, my officer confronted an individual coming from inside the residence," Porter said. "He displayed a weapon, my officer gave verbal commands to this individual. A shot was fired by my officer striking this individual."
The teen was taken to the hospital, but their condition was not known.
Neighbors described seeing multiple men scatter from the home when police arrived. Many were terrified by the scene unfolding right outside their front doors.
"My kids got to screaming, 'Ma, someone is in the yard, cops are chasing somebody,'" Dorothea Jordan said. "I peek out the front yard, I see a cop vest, gun drawn. I hear a shot and run back in the house, and five seconds later, choppers, dogs, everything."
Porter said there have been a lot of issues with burglaries in Clayton County. He commends the resident who called 911 for taking a pro-active approach in fighting crime.
"I want to stress, to the residents of Clayton County, I appreciated their commitment for getting involved with crime in general," Porter said.
Agents with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating.
The officer, who was not hurt, was put on administrative leave while the GBI investigates.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, police were trying to sort out how many suspects were trying to break into the house before the shooting happened.
