Atlanta police say a federal grant will allow the department to hire 15 military veterans as officers.
The Atlanta Police Department will receive the estimated $18 million over the next three years.
Police said in a statement Wednesday that the new positions will allow the department to reallocate existing personnel to create the "APD Path Force" aimed at providing security and patrols to the developing Atlanta BeltLine. The Atlanta BeltLine is a project to create a network of public parks, multi-use trails and transit by re-using 22-miles of historic railroad corridors circling downtown and connecting 45 neighborhoods directly to each other.
The grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of federal Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) program.
