ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A 21-year-old Georgia State University student died early Wednesday after crashing his car into a downtown Atlanta ice cream shop.
The accident happened at about 2 a.m. at the Häagen-Dazs on Upper Alabama Street near the entrance to Underground Atlanta.
According to Atlanta Police Department Capt. Adam Lee, an officer working at a nearby precinct at Underground Atlanta heard a loud crash.
"He came over here to investigate, and he saw this vehicle that was practically inside of the Haagen-Dazs ice cream shop," said Lee.
A man in the driver's seat was critically wounded.
"The witnesses are telling us that he was traveling at a very high rate of speed," Lee said. "It looked like for a period that he lost control of his vehicle, and he jumped the curb."
His silver Infiniti apparently went airborne, crashing sideways through the front of the shop.
The owner of the Haagen-Dazs shop told CBS Atlanta News that it could take weeks to make the repairs, meaning he'll have to close during the busiest part of the tourist season.
The victim died on the way to Grady Memorial Hospital, police said. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office identified him as Timothy Nixon, 21, of Atlanta. He was a student at GSU, according to Lee.
