FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Fulton County police are still searching for the person involved in the hit-and-run accident that killed Ja'Leah Felix, 5.
The little girl was struck in the 5300 block of Campbellton Road around 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Ja'Leah was from Colorado. She was in Atlanta visiting her father for the summer. Her mother, Rose Saint Louis, was very emotional when she arrived in town Wednesday evening.
Reporter Tony McNary spoke with Saint Louis when she arrived at the accident location, now marked with stuffed bears.
"She was my only child-- my best friend. I want the person who murdered her caught. I would have accepted it if it was an accident, but the person hit her and kept going. That's murder," said Saint Louis.
Police said Ja'Leah and her 9-year-old sister crossed the road to get to Sandtown Park. Ja'Leah dropped her shoe and returned to get it. A driver hit her and kept going.
"Turn yourself in; do the right thing. Turn yourself in," begged Ja'Leah's neighbor when asked if he had a message for the driver. He identified himself only as "GRIFF."
Parents visiting the Sandtown gym Wednesday morning described Campbellton Road as "very busy."
"They should have something (a cross walk) out here because there's a lot of kids in this area. With the elementary school being right here, and the kids playing at the gym, that is a very busy intersection," said Ashley Amiger.
Witnesses described the vehicle as a dark-colored SUV or pickup, but other than that, police had few leads.
"There were no indicators left by the vehicle. There's no debris in the roadway that we've been able to observe," said Corporal Kay Lester with the Fulton County Police Department.
Lester asked anyone who was in the area of the accident at the time to call police at 404-730-7911 if they saw anything.
