ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A Georgia Institute of Technology student shot an intruder early Tuesday morning, but police said the "intruder" turned out to be a confused neighbor, more than likely "high on a substance other than alcohol."
It happened at 1035 Curran Street around 5:30 a.m.
When Atlanta police responded, they found Adam Keller, 22, shot in the chest. He was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital in critical, but stable, condition.
Police said Keller broke into the home through a window. He then charged one of the residents, a graduate student. That student shot Keller with a semi-automatic gun.
Police later determined that Keller was more than likely "high on something."
"To be honest with you, he (Keller) lives in the general area, and he got so high, he probably thought one of these was his house," said PJ Roberson, an Atlanta police investigator.
Police said Keller also had unsuccessfully tried to enter a home at 1032 Curran beforehand.
Keller was charged with two counts of criminal trespass and criminal damage to property in the second degree.
Roberson said the student, whose name was not released, likely will not face charges.
Neighbors and other students in the area applauded the student's actions.
"You have a gun, and somebody intrudes your space, than you should protect yourself," said Darrin Myles.
