KENNESAW, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Residents in the Deerfield subdivision in Kennesaw aren't happy that the city approved plans to allow A. R. Brooks Enterprises to relocate to a neighboring industrial park. The petroleum company does business as Lance Oil Co.
Kennesaw City Council members approved a special land use permit and variance request with a 5 to 0 vote. The vote will allow the wholesale petroleum distributor to move to 2140 Moon Station Dr., near the subdivision.
Some residents don't like the idea of the company adding a 30,000-gallon underground tank to store petroleum.
"We're worried about not only leakage in the ground, but maybe an explosion," said resident Mickey Gollahon, who lives in the nearby Deerfield subdivision.
Butch Thompson, of nearby Butch Thompson Enterprises, liked the idea.
"We need a neighbor. This building has been empty for years now," Thompson said.
City zoning and planning administrator Darryl Simmons recommended the council approve the special land use permit.
"The area is already zoned heavy industrial," Simmons said. "A.R. Brooks Enterprises will have to follow strict state and federal guidelines already in place."
Simmons also said the company only plans to use the tank to store extra fuel from trucks returning at the end of the day, and not as a regular fueling station. That fuel will then be reused for the company's smaller trucks.
