Robert Earl Striggles
PEACHTREE CITY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Peachtree City police arrested a suspected arsonist after they said someone set fire to the Kedron Field House and Aquatic Center.
Robert Earl Striggles, 19, was arrested around 3 p.m. Thursday.
Around 6:20 a.m. that day, an aquatic staff member arrived for a swim meet and saw the fire sprinkler and lighting system had been activated. There were also signs of smoke in and around the building.
A joint investigation between the police and fire departments revealed one fire had been set behind the lobby's reception desk, and the other had been set in a storage room.
It appears the fires were started with an "ignitable liquid," and an unidentified liquid had been poured on several of the desks within the office area.
Because there was no forced entry, the investigation focused on people who had access to the Kedron Field House.
A review of the video surveillance system determined the person who started the fires worked for the janitorial company that cleans the building at night, police said.
With the assistance of Palmetto Police Department, Striggles was arrested and was taken to the Fayette County Jail.
Striggles is charged with one count of arson, one count of burglary and one count of interference with government property, all felonies.
