CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Clayton County police shot and killed a man late Wednesday night after they said he first fired at them. Two other people, including an officer, were injured.

"It was like a shootout," said Darius Baugh who lives near nearby. It happened on Mt. Zion Road, near Tara Boulevard.

Sgt. Otis Willis III said two officers pulled over a car occupied by five people and found that one of them had an outstanding warrant. When the officers attempted to pat the man down, the suspect reportedly resisted and pulled a weapon from his waistband.

"He presented a weapon, while firing it. Officers drew their weapons, and fired in self-defense of their lives," said Willis.

The man, whose name was not immediately released, died.

Willis said the suspect also shot the driver of the car that he was in. That man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. His condition was not known.

Two of the other occupants from the car were taken into custody. Another fled the scene, according to Willis.

One of the officers was also taken to the hospital with injuries related to the altercation, Willis said. He was not shot.

Investigators remained on the scene most of the night, blocking off the entrance to the Park of Mt. Zion apartments.

"It was a lot of police cars. They wouldn't let anybody pass," said Baugh, who was forced to stay outside until 3 a.m.

The incident is under investigation by Clayton County police and the GBI.
