Hundreds come together to stop the violence

STONE MOUNTAIN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Hundreds of people gathered at Victory for the World Church in Stone Mountain for the Youth Violence Summit. It was held as a direct result of the shooting at that church two weeks ago. Two young men shot and killed each other in the parking lot after a funeral for another murder victim.

The summit was to stop the cycle of violence. The family of Carlos Henderson, 19, one of the shooting victims, attended the event.

"This needs to occur more than after the death of two people," said Harrison Benton, the victim's brother.

Benton spoke to the crowd, which included Deborah Davis and her grandchildren. Davis brought them from Clayton County.

"I try to teach them and try to let them know what's going on," said Davis.

Her grandkids lost one of their cousins to violence. Isaiah Strickland, 14, said it's been tough. He said Henderson's speech touched him.

"It was nice to hear them say not to have violence and stop gang violence," said Strickland.

Benton said he wanted to tell the kids to reach out to friends and family. "That violence is not the answer. All you have to do is pick up the phone and talk to someone," said Benton.

He wore a T-shirt with his brother's picture on the front and M.B.K. on the back. It stands for "My Brother's Keeper" and Benton said that's why he will work to stop the violence, so no one else has to live through a tragedy.
