Grocery chain creating jobs in Clayton County

CLAYTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

David Morgan, 29, is a father of two and an Iraq war veteran.

"My tours began in 2005 was Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation New Dawn and Operation Enduring Freedom," said Morgan.

Like many veterans, after his tour of duty Morgan had a hard time finding a job.

"It's been very tough because a lot of places don't generally hire soldiers," Morgan said.

But things have changed for this soldier after Wayfield Foods opened a brand new store in his community.

"I was actually pretty grateful that I got the job here," said Morgan.

It's the second grocery story Wayfield Foods opened this month in Clayton County. Clayton County Commission Chairman Eldrin Bell said the jobs and added economic development are needed.

"I have been after them for about three to five years, as I have other small businesses. We have too many vacant spaces here and I want to fill them up," said Bell.

Those vacant spaces are evident in the River Station shopping center where Wayfield opened. Bell hopes the store's presence will attract more businesses to the area.

"The excitement that we have and the economic drivers that come to our community, but more particularly this store has hired over 100 young people in the Clayton County area," said Bell.

Some new employees like Rhunnell Walker may not be young, but she is young at heart. Walker is working to help get her nephew through college.

"My nephew plays at the University of Georgia, Garrison Smith," Walker said.

Walker is happy she and her neighbors have more employment options in a community she said is often neglected.

"We have a lot of blue collar people and everything. All we had, really to choose from, is Walmart, Public and Kroger," said Walker.
