DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A plane has run off the runway at DeKalb-Peachtree Airport in DeKalb County, according to a spokesperson with the Federal Aviation Administration.

The plane, a Hawker Beechcraft 40, was landing at the airport after taking off from Gadsden, AL. The flight's final destination was Jacksonville, FL.

A spokesperson with the DeKalb County Fire Department said the plane went about 100 feet off the runway and went down a hill before it hit a fence and stopped.

"They just ran out of runway. We don't know the reason why, they didn't stop in the allotted distance that was given," DeKalb Battalion Fire Chief Christopher Williamson said.

It was unclear if the plane overshot the runway or if there was a mechanical problem.

Four people were on the plane, including two pilots and two passengers. All four were taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for observation after minor injuries were reported, according to the spokesperson.

"I was concerned about it, concerned about the people that were on the plane" witness Carolyn Hall said.

A hazmat crew was called to the scene of the accident because the plane was leaking jet fuel. There were about 700 gallons of fuel onboard.

"What our hazmat team did when they responded is they had some catch basins that they put under the fuselage to get most of the fuel. They also had some blankets to keep it from going into sewer drains, creeks and stuff like that. Anything that came off is contained to that one crash area," Williamson said.

Investigators said it could take several months to determine the cause of the accident.
