Police in Cedartown amp up patrol after threats of KKK march

CEDARTOWN, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

One week after a pizza delivery woman was killed, Cedartown is buzzing with rumors of a possible KKK march.

Elizabeth Hutcheson, 27, was killed last week while delivering a pizza for Domino's to a house on Thompson Street.

On Tuesday, Cedartown police said they received numerous calls about the KKK planning a march through the area where she was killed.

Cedartown Police Assistant Chief Jamie Newsome said most of the talk of that possible rally was on Facebook, and he had no concrete evidence that a rally would actually happen. But to play it safe, he had police out in force anyway.

"I would rather put extra patrols in an area to prevent something that probably wasn't going to happen anyway than ignore it and let something happen," Newsome said. "We wanted to send the message to people in the community that we won't tolerate violence."

Neighbor Wayne Brown said he believes the patrols helped put a stop to a potential conflict.

"Everybody was jittery, there was a lot of police cars riding," Brown said.
