AUGUSTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A young Georgia woman battling a flesh-eating disease has been upgraded from critical to serious condition.

She was upgraded from critical to serious condition at Doctors Hospital of Augusta on Tuesday.

Aimee Copeland, 24, developed necrotizing fasciitis after cutting her leg in a May 1 fall from a homemade zip line over a west Georgia river. Her left leg, right foot and both hands have been amputated.

Critical condition is defined as vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient may be unconscious. Indicators are unfavorable.

Serious condition is defined as vital signs are unstable and not within normal limits. Patient is acutely ill. Indicators are questionable.
