CBS Atlanta questions contractor and property owner about illegal waste site

FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

CBS Atlanta News had tough questions for the contractor operating an illegal waste transfer site on Sheriff Road in Fulton County.

"Do you all have other sites like this in metro Atlanta?" asked CBS Atlanta Reporter Adam Murphy.

"No, no, this is the only one we had like this," said a contractor with Kingston Utilities.

Fulton County investigators ordered Kingston Utilities to stop operating here after they determined the property was not zoned for waste disposal.  So workers dug up one of the tanks in the ground on Friday.

County investigators said the company was storing restaurant grease in the tanks and the person ultimately responsible is the owner of the property Vuela Rhodes.

"You guys performed an excellent job in a quick amount of time and I think that if we continue to have investigations like this then together communities will be cleaned up," said neighbor Sandra Lang.

CBS Atlanta News spoke with Vuela Rhodes over the phone Friday and she said she was unaware of the activity that was taking place on the property.

She said her husband leased the land to a group of contractors before he passed away and she was unclear about the agreement.

She will be cited and have to face a judge.
