DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
An early Friday morning house fire killed a woman, 72, and sent her son to the hospital.
It happened in DeKalb County on Terratim Lane around 5:30 a.m.
DeKalb County Fire Assistant Chief Steve Ham said crews arrived to find heavy flames and smoke pouring from the home and the woman trapped inside.
Neighbors told CBS Atlanta the man jumped to safety from a second-story window. They woke to find him screaming outside on his front lawn.
"He said my mama's in the house, and then you started seeing the window blow from the fire," said Patrick West, who lives across the street.
The man told responders that his mother was still in the home.
The woman was rescued and paramedics performed CPR, according to the fire department.
Both were transported to Grady.
The woman died at the hospital. Her son has minor burns and scrapes and is expected to make a full recovery.
The fire department said the fire is believed to have originated in one of the bedrooms but an official cause had not been determined.
"He (the son) said something about a mattress on fire," said West.
Neighbors said they loved the elderly woman and called her "Mama".
"Nice lady, beautiful heart and spirit," said West.
As of Friday morning, the family's names had not been released pending notification of kin.
