MARIETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Marietta police reported that a man was convicted for stealing more than $500,000 from the Food and Nutrition Services division.

In June of 2010, investigators received a tip from a concerned citizen that Shamsha Vasay, the owner of a Chevron gas station, was possibly committing food stamp fraud.

Tipsters told police that Vasay was allowing customers to illegally use their EBT cards to make cash withdrawals and purchases outside the scope of use for the cards.

The investigation revealed that since June of 2009 Vasay had stolen more than $500,000 from the Food and Nutrition Services division, which coordinates food stamp vouchers and EBT cards.

Vasay was arrested and charged federally for food stamp fraud.

Vasay was convicted of his charges and was sentenced to 33 months in prison.
