Tough Questions for chairman of Gwinnett County Commission

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

CBS Atlanta News had Tough Questions for Gwinnett County Commission Chairman Charlotte Nash on Friday regarding the recent actions of some board members.

"Absolutely not," said Nash when asked if she was aware of any illegal activity that was going on.

Nash leads a troubled board of commissioners that are now dealing with the downfall of Shirley Lasseter.

"It is what it is, and we have to cope with it. We have to handle it, so that's what we're doing. I'm very disappointed," said Nash.

Lasseter pleaded guilty in federal court Thursday to accepting $36,000 to push through a real estate development.

Sabrina Smith with Gwinnett Citizens for Responsible Government said it's another black eye on the county.

"Well it is definitely very sad because it does harm the citizens and taxpayers here in Gwinnett County, but I actually think it's a good thing because the more we can do to move corrupt politicians out of office the better it is for everyone," said Smith.

Lasseter promised an undercover FBI agent, posing as a businessman, her approval for a development on Boggs Road in return for money.

Her son John Fanning, who's on the county zoning appeals board and one of her friends, were also in on the deal. They, too, pleaded guilty to federal charges.

"When something like this occurs, they all know it means that the distrust level goes up, and they are going to have to work harder than ever to ensure that there is openness and transparency," said Smith.

Lasseter is the most recent board member to face controversy.

Former Chairman Charles Bannister stepped down in 2010 over questionable land dealings, and former Commissioner Kevin Kenerly was actually indicted.

"I can only speak for myself and what I see from the others. I think the board is trying to do the right thing in the decisions that they make on behalf of the residents and businesses of Gwinnett County," said Nash.
