Workers say racial bias permeates animal shelter

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA (AP) -

A report on an animal shelter near Atlanta outlines complaints by animal control officers that racial comments are part of the work culture there.

The Gwinnett Daily Post reports that the shelter's manager and two other employees have left the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter after an internal investigation stemming from a worker's complaint about "a culture of bigotry."

The 108-page report, obtained by the Daily Post and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, outlines several complaints including one that a top shelter official called President Barack Obama an "(expletive) ape." An employee also said an email circulated around the office comparing First Lady Michelle Obama to an ape.

Gwinnett County police spokesman Jake Smith tells the Journal-Constitution that a police lieutenant who was the shelter's supervisor retired in May shortly after being reassigned to another post.
