The Strand theater opened as a movie theater in 1935 and existed as a movie theater until 1976. A massive renovation and 77 years later, supporters said the Strand is better than ever.
"The Strand is such an important resource for our community and we need to save it," said Faye Dimassimo, with Friends of the Strand. "Our goal is to retire a $1.6 million bill that was for the renovation and some operating cost that was associated with starting the theater back up."
The friends of the Strand are hosting a phone-a-thon that they hope will raise $50,000 by 9 p.m. Wednesday.
"We are actually ahead of schedule in terms of what we need to raise each hour to make $50,000 by 9 p.m., but we don't want anyone to think that means don't bother to call in, we need it. Please call in," Dimassimo said.
Calling isn't the only way to make a pledge however. Some people like Roy Ford, who is visiting from Australia, stopped by the theater to enjoy the phone-a-thon's music and entertainment that changed every hour.
"We've heard first-class entertainment that's worth paying for," Ford said.
Although the debt is large and times are tough, the Strand's supporters remain optimistic.
"We will continue to find creative ways to make sure the strand is always here," Dimassimo said.
