SMYRNA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A mother and her two young children are recovering at local hospitals after an SUV slammed into them.

Lisa Stark was crossing Concord Road at Hollis Street at about 7:45 a.m. Monday when the SUV hit them, police said. Stark was taken to Wellstar Kennestone Hospital with a broken ankle. Her children, a 5-year-old and a 7-month-old, were taken to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. None of their injuries are life threatening, police said.

There is no crosswalk or stop sign on the main road, and the nearest traffic signal is about 200 yards from the intersection where the crash took place. People who work nearby told CBS Atlanta crossing at that intersection can be dangerous.

Estefania Lupo, who works at a daycare center right across the street from where the accident occurred, said it was only a matter time before someone was hurt. "It's pretty dangerous," Lupo said. "You either hear the cars hitting their brakes or see accidents right in front of the school."

Jim Ethridge walks his dog along Concord each day. CBS Atlanta had to cross the busy street to talk to him. He didn't want to take the any risks with his dog. "It's fairly dangerous. You gotta keep your eye out," Ethridge said. "It would definitely help to have a crosswalk."

CBS Atlanta asked Jennifer Bennett, a spokeswoman for City Hall, what Smyrna is doing to make that intersection safer. Bennett said the city had planned to put in a traffic light and a crosswalk with push-button signals well before the crash. That work is scheduled to begin in September.

Lupo was not satisfied. "Not quick enough. Not with the accidents that happen," Lupo said.

Bennett insisted the intersection is not dangerous.
