ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

During a career that spans 30 years, television and movies, comedy and drama, actor Rob Lowe has done it all. But now Lowe is taking on a role that might surprise you - "Official ‘Unofficial' California Tour Guide."

The Golden Globe nominee turned Golden State tour guide says the reason is simple. "California has given me everything. I came there as a 13-year-old kid who wanted to be an actor. My dreams literally came true," he told CBSAtlanta.com

Whatever he can do to help the state's struggling economy, that's what he'll do. "California relies on tourism; it's 900,000 jobs in California alone. Every state is looking to pump up its economy, so to be able to help do that is something that I really have enjoyed being able to be a part of," said Lowe.

So if you're looking to escape the south for a summer vacation with the family, Lowe and the nonprofit group he's working with, Visit California, hope you'll consider the west coast.

Lowe says Cali's geography alone is unparalleled. "You can be at a beach in Malibu and be blown away with the beauty and the splendor and the scene of everybody there. Then you can get in the car and drive an hour and a half and be skiing in the same day," said Lowe.

And if you're looking to plan a California getaway but don't know where to start, Lowe shares some of his insider tips from living in the state for 35 years in a web series for Visit California.

You can find the topic that best suits your tastes and hobbies in a series of video vignettes. His web series covers everything from golfing, skiing, dining, family attractions and more.

But it's only in his interview with CBSAtlanta.com, that the passionate surfer reveals some of his favorite surf-spots!
