It has been a few weeks since I updated my blog and I am sorry. I just have had a hard time navigating my feelings as well as my sister's. Although writing about my sister's illness helps me deal withMore >
It's been a long time since I have posted an update on our family's battle with breast cancer, and a lot has happened.
The last time I checked in, Barb was told she would have to have a double mastectomy. The surgery went as well as can be expected and doctors followed it up with chemo treatments which have been debilitating at times. Needless to say, she powered through them with the support her husband, family and friends.
A couple weeks ago it looked as if Barb was nearing the finish line. Chemo was done, she was supposed to rest and recover for three weeks and then undergo radiation treatments every day for six weeks. Once that was completed, Barb was supposed to undergo the final procedure to reconstruct breasts.
Unfortunately there was a setback. Barb discovered a small pimple on top of her breast. She immediately went to the hospital where doctors removed it and another one nearby. She later found out both were cancerous. But the troubling news was doctors found MORE CANCER underneath the skin!
As you might expect, all of us are devastated! Doctors say there was not supposed to be any cancer left after the mastectomy. The surgeon told Barb in her 20 years of dealing with breast cancer she has only seen two cases where cancer cells were found in the area where the breast were removed and only one survived. Barb is the third case.
Doctors say they can and will fight the cancer and WE ALL BELIEVE IT WILL BE BEATEN! However the doctors also say it is an aggressive form of cancer and if it comes back, it won't be pretty.
When I learned all of this from my mother and then my brother-in-law, I COULDN'T BREATHE! The thought of losing Barb literally TOOK MY BREATH AWAY! It was a difficult couple of days after hearing the news. I feel so helpless and inadequate. I want to do more to help my sister fight, but whatever I do or say, I feel like it's not enough. I also must admit I realize I have not been a good friend or rock for my brother-in-law.
I haven't called or checked on him like I should. He has been on the front lines from day one. He is the one who takes Barb and picks her up from the hospital. He is the one who works all day then comes home to care for his sick wife. Brendon is there to love support and comfort his daughter, my niece, when mommy is not feeling well. He has to do all that while also dealing with the realization that his soul mate is fighting for her life.
I need to do better. I need to be there for him when he needs someone to talk to, laugh at and with. I have to be there to help him get his mind off the difficult times he is going through. I will do better.
Cancer is such an INSIDEOUS disease and I HATE IT! Sounds silly, I know, but it is how I feel. It's trying its best to take someone away from me that I love with all my heart! It is trying to rob a 9-year-old girl of her best friend. It's trying to take away a loving wife from her husband.
As I said earlier, we will continue to fight and support Barb no matter what. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated.
