Atlanta as Hollywood East?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

In the late seventies and early eighties, Hollywood was coming to Georgia to film movies and TV shows, including the Smokey and the Bandit series, on a regular basis. But it wasn't until recently that they started coming back to Hollywood East. Atlanta is now one step closer to earning that nickname with the opening of Screen Gems new sound stage.

The Lakewood Fairgrounds, leased from the city in 2010 by EUE/Screen Gems, became Atlanta's first Hollywood-style movie lot. And now Stage Six, a 30,000 square foot, 40 foot tall, column free, state-of-the-art sound stage, is open for business.

The EUE/Screen Gems Studio Campus, Atlanta is home to TV shows on BET and USA networks and has already been used to complete two big-budget movies that will be out later this year.

Executive vice president Kris Bagwell spoke with CBS Atlanta's Aaron Childers about the new sound stage, the history of the fairgrounds, and why the movie business is good for Georgia.
