UNION CITY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A man has turned himself in to police following a hit-and-run accident in which a Union City woman was killed over the weekend.

According to Union City Police, 20-year-old Jamonta Leon Smith was behind the wheel of a car that struck 29-year-old Latara Worthy early Sunday morning.

Smith said he was driving over a hill on South Fulton Parkway when he hit something in the middle of the road.

According to Smith, he stopped his car, got out and looked around to see what he hit, but didn't find anything. He then continued to drive home.

Then on Monday, Smith turned himself in to police after seeing media reports about Worthy's death, police said.

Union City Police said Worthy, who would have turned 30 on Tuesday, was walking along the side of South Fulton Parkway at Mason Road just before 3 a.m. when she hit.

Worthy lived with her one-and-a-half-year-old daughter and husband, not far from the accident happened.

Wilhelmina Shanks, Worthy's Aunt, said Worthy's husband is distraught and her daughter keeps asking where she is.

Meanwhile, neighbors like Charice Leslie, from Worthy's tight-knit community, were shocked at news of her death.

"It made me frightened because it could have been myself," Leslie said, after hearing the news. "Now that little girl and her husband are without a mom and a wife."

Worthy's aunt said she was a teacher at Woodland Middle School in East Point and was about to earn her master's degree.

According to a Union City police spokesperson, Smith cooperated with police.  He was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, vehicular homicide and failure to render aid.

Smith bonded out of the South Fulton Regional Jail around 2 a.m. Tuesday.
