PEACHTREE CITY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Newt Gingrich continued his push for a Presidential Primary win in Georgia next month, with three more rallies around Atlanta Saturday, on top of the one he had Friday night in Peachtree City. There, a couple hundred people attended the rally, which was held in an airplane hanger.
Gingrich wasted no time calling out Mitt Romney and Ron Paul for declining an upcoming debate. It was scheduled to take place in Georgia several days before the primary, but now it won't happen.
"If you are afraid to debate Gingrich, you sure can't debate Barack Obama," Gingrich told the crowd.
He called the race wide open, but nationally he trails both Romney and Santorum in national polls.
After the event, he answered questions from the media. "It's very crucial to win Georgia. How crucial is it for Mitt Romney to win Michigan? Or Santorum to win Pennsylvania? We'll see," Gingrich said.
Supporters said Gingrich must win Georgia to continue his campaign.
"If he does not, it will be a long, long road. It will be a 1-in-100 shot," said Mike Mitchell, supporter.
"There has to be more publicity on his half and reaching out to the people," said Mary Mitchell.
The former house speaker said his experience representing the state as a Congressman for 20 years gives him a good chance at winning the primary. He's counting on voters like Troy Dettmering.
"I wanted to see Newt. It's been awhile since I saw him," said Dettmering.
Gingrich continued his rallies on Saturday, with stops in Cumming, Gwinnett County, and Cobb County. He told the crowds at every stop of his energy plan, which involves tapping into the resources already on this continent, especially in the Dakotas. Gingrich said there is no reason Americans can't hope to pay $2.50 a gallon for gas, even if the country entirely supplies its own power sources.
