MARIETTA, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
Marietta police said many drivers are putting officers' lives at risk by failing to obey Georgia's move over law.
"All it takes is for someone to misstep and wind up in a lane of traffic, we're that close," Ofc. Justin Rutland.
Rutland showed CBS Atlanta dash cam video from Wednesday, proof of the daily danger officers face.
"Sometimes it's a matter of you can reach out and slap the cars that drive by, it's that close," Rutland said.
Even though officers use their flashing lights, drivers still speed by.
"It's no wider than a queen sized bed, width, between us. It's very close, very scary," Rutland said.
State law requires drivers to slow down and move over one lane for emergency vehicles stopped on the side of the road.
"The reason I go out there and write tickets is I've worked fatal and serious injury crashes. I know what can happen," Rutland said.
Violators can be fined up to $500.
