ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Georgia Department of Transportation geared up overnight in anticipation of winter weather in nine northeast Georgia counties.

Communications Officer Teri Pope said crews began work monitoring road conditions at midnight in Banks, Dawson, Habersham, Lumpkin, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union and White counties. Crews in other areas are on call if needed.

GDOT said the work will conclude by 10 a.m. Tuesday, but GDOT will continue to monitor temperatures and road conditions until the threat of winter precipitation is over.

GDOT announced only two road closures: SR 180 Spur in Towns County and part of SR 348/Richard Russell Scenic Parkway in Union and White Counties.

Pope said GDOT encourages drivers to stay off the roads unless necessary before daybreak and to call 511, go to GDOT's Facebook page or www.511ga.org for travel information.

GDOT asks drivers to slow down and use caution on roads during winter weather.
