DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A DeKalb County family was displaced by a house fire that firefighters said began in the attached garage of a Stone Mountain home early Monday.
Only the homeowner was home at the time, and was woken up by sounds of the fire.
The man told CBS Atlanta News he came down the stairs and saw flames shooting from the garage. He was able to escape the home on Glen Cove Lane without injury.
Battalion Chief Garret Smith said first responders were met with heavy fire and smoke from the garage on arrival.
The fire spread to the upper level of the home but, despite challenges from the cold weather, crews were able to get the fire knocked down quickly, according to Smith.
Smith said that firefighters have to monitor equipment and hoses for freezing, as well as watch for water freezing on the roads.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. There were no injuries reported.
