ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Atlanta school board members will meet with members of the Atlanta City Council Monday to discuss the status of the city's school rezoning process.

"Monday's meeting between the Atlanta City Council and the Atlanta Board of Education is a continuation of a number of conversations the two governmental bodies are having around issues of mutual interest, school rezoning being one of them," said Atlanta City Council President Ceasar C. Mitchell. "It is our goal to ensure the public a transparent and thoroughly deliberated process."

The meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. in the Board of Education's Center for Learning and Leading Auditorium, Rooms 1 and 2.

Atlanta Public Schools operates 85 school buildings. According to school officials, those buildings have a planning capacity to serve over 62,500 students, while current APS traditional enrollment is roughly 46,000.

Costs to maintain under-used space are significant, school officials said. The school district is facing a potentially long period of budgetary constraints which will make the added cost of carrying under-utilized facilities more difficult than in the past.

No decisions have been made, school officials said, and no action will be taken at the joint meeting.
