ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

One week after the beating of Brandon White was caught on camera, outside a convenience store in southwest Atlanta, Georgia Congressman John Lewis speaks out against the brutal act.

Lewis joined other politicians in condemning the attack as a hate crime Saturday. The rally in support of White, who is gay, was organized by leaders of the Gay and Lesbian community.

"We all must respect the dignity and the worth of every human being," said Representative Lewis, speaking before a crowd gathered across the street from where the beating occurred.

People apparently stood by and recorded with cell phone cameras, doing nothing to stop the attack on the 20-year-old.

"We cannot discriminate against someone because that person happen to be straight or gay," said Lewis.  "We are all one people we are one family, we are brothers and sisters."

Police have arrested Christopher Cain, 18, in connection to the attack. Investigators say there are two other men who are also wanted as suspects.
