Georgia Country star Jason Aldean takes his 'Dirt Road' to Grammys

LOS ANGELES (AP) -

Georgia boy and one of Country music's hottest stars Jason Aldean is on a "dirt road" to the Grammy Awards going down this Sunday on CBS.

With three nominations, he ties Cee Lo Green for the Georgia artist garnering the most nods.

CBS national correspondent Ben Tracy recently met up with Aldean at one of his sold-out shows in Orlando.

"Right now looking at all these seats and knowing they're all going to be filled up tonight is just crazy," Aldean said. He still seems surprised by his surging popularity and the kind of show he can now afford to put on.

"I wanted to make it more of an event you know more than just a normal concert or a normal show. That's one thing that I've always tried to keep in mind when we're putting our show together is ‘ok how do I keep people from wanting to go to the bathroom?'" Aldean said.

But once he was up in the spotlight, the crowd of 20,000 was definitely moving - but not toward the exits.

Aldean's show is built around My Kind of Party, the No. 1 selling Country album of 2011. Only music artists Adele, Michael Buble, Lady Gaga and Lil' Wayne sold more records last year.

But despite his seemingly rapid rise, Jason Aldean is far from an overnight success. He was dropped twice by labels.

"I was really close to leaving. I remember calling my cousin and saying 'hey dude I need a job' you know I'm ready to move back. I said you know this is just it's not happening," Aldean said.

But then he was spotted by a small independent label with nothing to lose. Broken Bow Records released Aldean's self-titled debut in 2005 which included his first number one single, Why?

He followed up with Relentless in 2007 and Wide Open in 2009, which had the mega- hit Big Green Tractor.

"That song exploded you know just blew up. I couldn't go in a restaurant and eat without somebody's phone ringing and that was their ring tone," Aldean said.

But it's when Aldean traded twang for a little country rap that his career really took off.

Dirt Road Anthem helped make his My Kind of Party album double platinum, earning him the 2011 Country Music Award for Album of the year.

Aldean said he learned a lot about performing while touring with Country stars Rascal Flatts. They also taught him this pre-show tequila shot tradition and the necessity of a backstage bar.

Aldean's down home style clearly connects with his fans, and his ego has not quite caught up with his new found fame.

Yet up on stage, Aldean does have that superstar swagger - the king of the dirt road.

Aldean is nominated for three Grammy Awards: Best Country Solo Performance for Dirt Road Anthem, Best Country Duo/Group Performance for Don't You Wanna Stay with Kelly Clarkson and Best Country Album My Kinda Party.

Watch to see if he wins on Sunday at 8 p.m. only on CBS.
