Suspect eludes police by hiding under insulation

COBB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Cobb County police are investigating why a man ran from police and was eventually found inside the attic of an Austell apartment building.

Cobb County Police Officer Michael Bowman said members of the department's VIPER unit approached the man around 6:45 p.m. Thursday and asked for identification.

The suspect said his ID was inside an apartment nearby. Officers followed him to the Hidden Hills Apartments on Landmark Way off Shenandoah Trail.

That's when the man ran into a building and locked himself in, Bowman said.

Police surrounded the building, calling in a tactical unit to assist.  Four units were evacuated and cleared without sign of the suspect.

Bowman said tear gas was thrown into the attic area, but they still couldn't locate the man.

Teams eventually found him in the attic, hiding under sheets of insulation.

The suspect continued to resist, was tazed by police and ultimately taken into custody just after midnight Friday.

Officer Bowman said the still unidentified man is currently charged with obstruction and giving false information to officers. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

No officers injured in the incident.

According to Bowman, apartment residents will need to allow the tear gas to dissipate before being allowed back into their homes.
