DeKalb lawmakers fail to vote on school board redistricting

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

DeKalb County lawmakers were supposed to meet Thursday and sign off on a map that would reshape their school board. Instead legislators spent the afternoon fighting against each other, leaving parents at the meeting frustrated.

Caroline Lord stood and watched in amazement as members of the DeKalb County delegation failed to come to a consensus on how to redraw districts. What she saw was unbelievable.

"I'm thinking that our taxpayer dollars are paying for this," said Lord.

DeKalb County lawmakers found themselves stuck trying to decide whether to go with a seven-member school board or cut it even further, down to five members.

They never agreed at Thursday's meeting, leaving the meeting without taking a vote.  Lord believes the fighting is hurting the children the lawmakers serve.

"There is a lot our taxpayers are paying for that is going towards lawsuits," said Lord.

Ultimately, she wants the issue put to a public vote.

"I would personally like to see a referendum.  I think that it's constitutional that we vote for representatives for our areas and our districts and that choice is being taken away from us," said Lord.
