Woman indicted for vehicular homicide in death of Atlanta police officer

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The woman accused in the death of a veteran Atlanta police officer has been indicted for vehicular homicide, among other charges.

On Jan. 24, Senior Officer Gail Thomas was helping another officer at the scene of an accident on I-75/85 near the Brookwood Interchange.

As she tried to divert traffic away from the accident on the highway, she was hit by a 1998 Honda Civic. 

Thomas was killed instantly.

The driver of the Civic, 22-year-old Chasity Nicole Jones, stopped after hitting Thomas and was arrested.

According to police, Jones was driving drunk.

Tuesday, Jones was indicted on 13 counts, including four counts of 1st degree vehicular homicide, two DUI counts, reckless driving, driving under the influence of drugs, failure to obey an authorized person directing traffic, two counts of the Spencer Pass Law, failure to maintain a lane and having an open alcohol container in the car.

A trial date has not yet been set.
