What is a
podiatrist? Are they considered doctors?
Absolutely! According to the America Podiatric Medical Association,
"a podiatrist is a doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM), also known as a
podiatric physician or surgeon, qualified by their education and training to
diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot, ankle and related structures
of the leg. Podiatrists are uniquely qualified among medical professionals to
treat the foot and ankle based on their education, training and
experience."
Why does a diabetic patient need to see a podiatrist?
Diabetics have a unique condition that can cause the loss of feeling in toes
and feet. A podiatrist is trained to handle all aspects of the diabetic
foot. They work in conjunction with the patients internist and /or
endocrinologist to be sure the patient is receiving optimal care with the goal
of leading a normal, healthy life.
Why does the podiatrist ask to see the shoes I wear?
Many people buy shoes for the style, rather than taking foot health into
consideration. Your feet take a lot of abuse throughout life. They
need to be treated with TLC in order to perform their best.
How often should I see a podiatrist?
After your first initial visit with a podiatrist, your physician will recommend
a treatment plan specific to your need of care. It is important that you follow
this treatment plan and partner with your physician to reach the long-term goal
of healthy feet.
