Gwinnett County police find body in Lake Lucerne

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A homeowner in Gwinnett County found a body in Lake Lucerne Friday.

Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Jake Smith the body has been identified as 25-year-old Javon Depass, the hit-and-run driver that hit an officer on Jan. 8 on Highway 78 and Lake Lucerne Road.

Depass fled the scene after hitting the patrol car and later hit a utility pole on Lake Lucerne Road near St. Moritz Drive.

Police said alcohol was thought to be a factor in the accidents.

Depass ran toward Lake Lucerne, according to reports. A police K9 tracked Depass' scent to the lake and lost it.

Depass' family notified police that he did not return home.

Friday, a homeowner saw the body floating in the lake behind his home.
