Norcross Police add street cameras to help fight crime

NORCROSS, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

With the click of a mouse, Sgt. Bill Grogan is able to maneuver more than a dozen street cameras in the city of Norcross. The cameras have helped the police department solve crimes.

"Our successes primarily have been with hit-and-run accidents where we have been able to identify the suspect vehicle in the hit-and-run, locate the tag, the driver, and prosecute," said Grogan.

Last week, the cameras helped Norcross Police track down a serial armed robber driving a silver Dodge Charger.

"Whereas I ... used to take a look at a case and say, 'all right, who do I need to talk to first?'  Now I'm like, 'which camera do I need to look at first?'" Grogan said.

The Iron Sky cameras cost the city of Norcross roughly $250,000, but the chief of police said the equipment didn't cost the taxpayers a dime.

"We're paying for this entirely out of forfeited money out of drug seizures. And we have an association with the DEA in Atlanta, and we receive forfeiture money from the DEA," said Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers.

Summers said the department hopes to add more cameras and eventually have as many as 100 of them to help fight crime.

"We also hope that it has a deterrent effect and people will know that we have the system, and that we're expanding the system and we hope that will deter people from committing crimes inside the city limits of Norcross," Summers said.
