Report: Door-to-door scam targeting Gwinnett seniors

Posted: Updated:
GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Gwinnett County police are investigating reported scam cases that may be connected in the Peachtree Corners area.

In each case a man lured the victims to the back of the home to inspect the property line.

The suspect spoke on a walkie-talkie in Spanish to an unknown person while with the victims.

The victims later reported that they were missing jewelry and cash.

On Jan. 7, an elderly woman called police to report that a Hispanic man came to her door and asked if she received the note he left a few days before.

The man said he came to install a fence in the back yard. The woman spent several minutes with the suspect in the back yard.

The homeowner said he was speaking on a walkie-talkie. At one point he spoke in Spanish, and then quickly walked to the front of the home.

The man got into a champagne colored Ford F150 and drove away.

The woman later discovered that several pieces of her jewelry had been stolen while she was outside.

After further investigation, detectives discovered a similar incident happened to someone who lived nearby on Dec. 28.

Another elderly female told detectives a man knocked on her door claiming to be her old newspaper delivery person.

The suspect hugged the victim and acted as if they had known each other for some time.

The woman told the man her husband was at home, and he quickly left.

He got into a copper colored vehicle driven by a second male suspect and drove away.

Anyone who encounters these suspects in the future is asked to call 911. It is likely that these suspects are specifically targeting older females who they believe are home alone.
