Cold temps increase the demand for space heaters

ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -

Freezing temps outside are sending people scrambling for items to keep their homes warm.  Today at an area hardware store, CBS Atlanta found folks flocking to get space heaters.

Hardware clerks say since the cold hit the metro Atlanta area, they've seen a steady supply of shoppers searching for the warming appliances. But heating experts warn that there are a few precautions you should take when using the portable heaters.

Shoppers like Barbara Coffen stopped by Ace Hardware for preventive measures today. She's stocking up on air filters for her heating unit.

"My filter is taken care of, and everything is working good," said Coffen.

But with the temps dipping into the 20s this week, Coffen is also depending on her space heaters for additional warmth in her home.

"I use it at night in each room because they do such a good job of keeping me warm," said Coffen.

Ace sales rep Keith Clark says his store has seen a steady stream of people flocking to buy space heaters.

"The colder it gets, the more  sales are going to be," said Clark.

For people using space heaters, Clark advises, "You shouldn't use extension cords, you shouldn't have it close to furniture, you shouldn't have it next to drapery." Most of all, Clark urges customers to remain in the same room with the heater. "Never leave them unattended," said Clark.

Coffen says those are good tips because not having a space heater in her home isn't an option.

"It's really important because it's so cold in my room, it really heats up well," she said.
