ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A Georgia Tech student was attacked and robbed in Home Park before sunrise Monday as he walked home from campus.
Atlanta police said the victim was a few blocks from his home on Tumlin Street in northwest Atlanta, near the Landon Learning Center, when two men in an older-model, gold Toyota Corolla got out of their vehicle and approached him. One of the men was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun.
Police said the men ordered the student to his knees and took his cell phone and wallet. The victim's father said the wallet contained several hundred dollars. The men then kicked the student in the head.
The victim managed to walk home where he called police and his parents.
His father told CBS Atlanta, his son, a senior, suffered a mild concussion. He was treated at Grady and released a few hours later.
This marked the latest in a series of attacks on Georgia Tech students over the past year, including robberies and sexual assaults.
Torrence Fike lives nearby. He estimated the crime wave has declined homeowners' property values up to $100,000 each.
"The students are fleeing from the neighborhood, and it's causing the property values to plummet because the values in this neighborhood, being next to a college campus, are driven by the rental potential, said Fike.
Georgia Tech Police have joined forces with Atlanta Police to increase patrols both on and off-campus. However, they remind students to take precautions, such as not walking alone at night.
The campus also offers free rides to students at night.
