DOUGLASVILLE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
A charity that provides shoes to children in group homes needed help meeting the need this year.
The TAN Shoe Drive provided shoes, socks, a copy of the New Testament and lunch to 125 children this year.
This is the eighth year the TAN Shoe Drive provided shoes to children in Metro Atlanta. The shoe drive was started by Tracy Allen Newsome, who was a plumber in metro Atlanta. When Newsome died his friend Bob Carpenter, who is also the head of the local office of the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, took over the shoe drive and made it into a non-profit organization.
Last year, the drive provided 80 shoes. This year additional requests have put the total number of shoes needed to 250.
On Dec. 17, the children were able to pick out their shoes and socks at Shoe Carnival in Douglasville. They were then treated to lunch.
