I-85 HOT lane protest groups form coalition

GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

A trio of groups opposed to the I-85 HOT lanes have formed a coalition in support of their common cause.

Against The Peach Pass, Stop the HOT Lane! and Stop Peach Pass have joined forces to create StolenLanes.org, a website dedicated to seeing an end to the High Occupancy Toll Lanes.

"The number of people opposed to the recent implementation of the HOT lanes keeps growing," said Victor Ramkissoon of Against The Peach Pass.

The three groups are urging the State Road and Tollway Authority, the Georgia Department of Transportation and local leaders to attend an upcoming town hall meeting.

"While some government officials try to downplay the seriousness of the impact to the community, we're stepping up to be recognized," said Chris Haley of Stop Peach Pass.

Ramkissoon agreed he is frustrated that state transportation leaders refuse to attend the town hall meeting.

"I think that's just brushing us off to the side," said Ramkissoon.  "I don't want to say it's disrespect, but I don't think they're taking us seriously."

HOT lane protestors said the new toll lanes were designed to improve traffic flow but have, in reality, lengthened their commute times.

StolenLanes.org has asked commuters to submit their questions about the HOT lanes to the new website.

"The number one question on the list is, what is the definition of success of this project?" said  Haley.

SRTA told CBS Atlanta News in an email, "We welcome feedback from the new group or any citizen."

The town hall meeting is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Gwinnett Justice Center.
