GWINNETT COUNTY, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -
The Gwinnett County school district confirmed on Tuesday it is investigating an alleged case of bullying at Mill Creek High School.
"They've called me fat, a whore, a b*tch," said Emily Harrell, a 14-year-old freshman at the school.
The school district said it got involved after reports someone attacked the teen as she waited for the bus in a common area of the school last week.
"The school district, we want our students to learn," said school spokesman Jorge Quintana. "In order to learn, they need to feel safe at school."
Harrell's mother said the bullying started while her daughter was in middle school but has carried on at Mill Creek.
"It's ongoing. It's persistent," said Kerry Harrell. "It interferes with her ability to do school work."
Harrell first complained to administrators after someone used her daughter's name and photo to open a Twitter account. Harrell said malicious and sexual messages were sent out from the account as well as on Facebook.
Quintana told CBS Atlanta it could not take action since the rude messages were sent over social networks that were off campus.
Since the fight at the school, the district said it will interview the students involved, as well as witnesses. It will also review security video from inside the school.
"It feels like someone just stepped on you," said Emily Harrell. "You just feel spit on, kind of, like you don't matter."
