Pet owners dump cats and dogs at shelter, shelter running out of space

SUWANEE, GA (CBS ATLANTA) -

The Georgia SPCA says in recent months more than a dozen cats and dogs have been dumped at their doorstep overnight.

Shelter Executive Director Jane Stewart says not only is it illegal for pet owners to abandon their animals, but they're now running out of space.

Stewart says she's found cats and dogs tied to the shelter's front door and other's in boxes.

She believes all of the animals dumped on their doorstep are victim's of the bad economy.

"It breaks my heart for the animals because they can't speak to us, we're their voice and often times they are frightened," Stewart said.

The Suwanee shelter is at capacity: 50 cats and 30 dogs.

"There's animal control but nobody wants to do that because a number of them end up getting euthanized, but that's more humane than leaving them on the side of the road," Stewart said.

Stewart believes many of the animals come from good homes but their owner's just fell on bad times and cant afford to take care of them with the down economy.

"If someone knows they are going to lose their home it's better that they come to us give us some time, instead of calling us the day they are having to leave," Stewart said.

Stewart said the shelter is being pushed to the limit financially because they pay to have all of the animals altered and vaccinated.

Adoption fees:

Dogs: $250

Kittens: $125

Cats: $100
